NDIS and SDA
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government program that provides support and services to people with disabilities. It allocates funding directly to eligible participants, empowering them to access the assistance they need to live independently and actively engage in their communities.
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) refers to housing purpose-built or adapted to support individuals with extreme functional impairments or very high support needs. SDA homes are designed to meet the unique requirements of people with disabilities, offering safe, accessible, and comfortable living environments.
SDA design falls into four categories under the SDA rules:
Essential Information
To access the NDIS, a person with disability must meet the following requirements:
Be an Australian citizen, or
Hold a permanent Australian visa, or
Hold a protected Special Category Visa (SCV), and
Be under 65 years of age.
Additionally, the individual must have a permanent disability that:
Significantly limits their ability to participate in activities or perform tasks without adequate support, and
Impacts their social and economic participation, making it likely that they will require ongoing support under the NDIS for their lifetime.
SDA demand data is regularly updated and provides insights on the number of SDA-eligible participants who:
Are currently living in SDA homes
Have SDA funding and are seeking suitable accommodation
Are looking for alternative SDA options
Have completed their SDA housing assessment and are awaiting SDA funding in their plan
